Identified/Independent Adoptions

INDEPENDENT  and  IDENTIFIED ADOPTIONS

An “independent adoption” can mean a couple of different things.

It may mean that a prospective adoptive family and a birth mother have already connected with one another and have made a plan for that baby’s placement.  This is what is commonly referred to as an “identified” placement and happens a great deal. This type of situation can be a beautiful way to build an adoption plan.  However, despite that fact that the people involved have created their own “match,” an agency and/or attorney still needs to be involved in the process to ensure that all of the State rules and laws are followed.

An independent adoption is one in which there is another agency or attorney involved (perhaps in a different state) and the agencies need to work in cooperation in order to ensure that all requirements are met and that a successful adoption can occur. The staff at Open Arms Adoptions has extensive experience in collaborating with other agencies and in working with the State system to facilitate adoptions crossing State lines. We are here to assist with the ICPC (Interstate Compact on Placement of Children) procedures and to provide whatever adoption related services your family will need.
